Active Mass under Pressure

چکیده
After a historical introduction to Poisson’s equation for Newtonian gravity, its analog for static gravitational fields in Einstein’s theory is reviewed. It appears that the pressure contribution to the active mass density in Einstein’s theory might also be noticeable at the Newtonian level. A form of its surprising appearance, first noticed by Richard Chase Tolman, was discussed half a century ago in the Hamburg Relativity Seminar and is resolved here. 1 Historical Introduction By “active” mass one means the mass considered as source of a gravitational field. This concept can be distinguished from that of the “passive” mass measuring the response to a gravitational field and of an “inertial” mass describing resistance against acceleration by any force, gravitational or other. These distinctions are useful for considering nonNewtonian or non-Einsteinian theories of gravity, or to assess which aspects of mass are

Distribution of lateral active earth pressure on a rigid retaining wall under various motion modes
The design of retaining walls depends on the magnitude of active pressure exerted from the backfill. Therefore, estimating the scale of this pressure is a fundamental factor in the design. In this study, to assess the active earth pressure, a rigid retaining wall was built capable of translating and/or rotating with adjustable speed. Further, several physical tests were conducte...
متن کاملDEM Analysis of Backfilled Walls Subjected to Active Translation Mode
In this paper, the problem of a retaining wall under active translation mode is investigated numerically. To this end, a series of numerical models is conducted using the discrete element code, PFC2D. The backfill soil is simulated by an assembly of separate cohesionless circular particles. Backfill soil was prepared by pouring soil particles from a specific height under gravity force and givin...
متن کاملSoil Arching Behind Retaining Walls under Active Translation Mode: Review and New Insights
Granular materials have a tendency to exhibit an arching effect by which the load is transferred from yielding parts to adjacent stationary parts. Retaining walls are among those structures that the soil arching plays an important role in the distribution of earth pressures. This paper briefly reviews the development of soil arching theory and its application to different geotechnical projects....
متن کاملAssessment of Semi-Active Tunes Mass Damper Application in Suppressing Seismic-Induced Vibration of an Existing Jacket Platform
In this study, mass, stiffness and damping matrices of the Nosrat jacket; located in Persian Gulf; equipped with Semi Active Tuned Mass Damper (SATMD) system have been derived after modeling the structure in SACS software. Owing to huge number of the degrees of freedom in the model, computation of on-line control of SATMD was time consuming. For this purpose, the size of the model was reduced i...
متن کاملThe Influence of the Pipe’s Material and the Mass Flow Rate on the Pressure Drop and Velocity Variation During Pneumatic Conveying of Wheat Using Computational Fluid Dynamics
According to flexibility of pneumatic conveying systems with respect to other types of transmission systems, this system has wide application in industry and agriculture processes. One important application of this system is in the loading and unloading tankers and powdery bulk materials such as trucks carrying cement, plaster and sand. Conveying efficiency is associated with pressure, which in...
